Snacks Recipes
Onion Pakoda is our family fav tea time snack and when it is a rainy day my H will sure tell me to make them as he loves fried snacks a lot especially when it is a rainy day. Onion pakoda is very famous south Indian snack sold is all the sweets and savory stalls. I Love the adyar andha bhavan cashew pakoda and onion pakoda a lot. I make this pakodas often they are crispy and delicious snack to go with a hot cup of Coffee or Tea. This is very popular street food in India and particularly in south India. They  call It thul pakoda as it is bits and pieces and a clump. This pakoda goes well with green chutney and a cup of tea/ coffee. In north they make this pakoda little different but the method is the same.

Prefect Crispy onion pakodas  Large red onions-1, finely (sliced)
  Chickpea/ bengal gram flour-1/2 cup
  Rice flour-1/4 cup
  Fennel seeds – 1/2 tsp
  Green chilies, chopped- 3 no’s

  Salt, to taste
  Oil for frying
  Method
  • Sift the flours together.
  • Rub a little salt into the sliced onions.
  • This is to bring out the natural juices from the onions so that we can add less water later.
  • Meanwhile, heat oil.
  • To the onions, add the both the flours, chilli powder, fennel seeds, ginger, green chillies, curry leaves and salt to taste.
  • Remove 3 tbsp of the hot oil and add to the mixture and Mix well.
  • If the mixture is slightly dry at this stage u can sprinkle water and mix well.
  • The mixture should just hold together when pressed.
  • Please do not add too much water in which case the product will be like the pakoda’s .
  • You can also test for spiciness and salt after frying a small portion and make adjustments to the other portions, if needed.
  •  Add this onion mixture to the hot oil in sprinkled way and fry them till golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Repeat for the remaining portions of the raw mixture.
  • Store in an air-tight container.
  Tips
  •  Finely chopped mint and cilantro can be added to the mixture.
  •  The quantity of onion can be reduced and whole cashew nuts can be added.
  • You can also add some chopped mint leaves to them it give a great flavor.
