Gulab Jamun Recipe |How to Make Gulab Jamun?

A dessert is what everyone craves for after a dinner. It would be more interesting when the desert includes sweets. Isn’t it? While there are plethora’s of sweets in India, each state being famous for a certain kind of sweet, Gulab Jamun stays the quintessential Indian desert irrespective of state. If there is any sweet that would just melt in your mouth once bitten into, that’s Gulab Jamun taking its name from Rose Berries.

Soft and spongy gulab Jamuns drenched in sugar syrup, this traditional Indian sweet goes well with a slab of vanilla ice cream. There are many readymade mixes available but homemade gulab Jamuns from traditional mawa delivers a taste that cannot match with any instant mixes in the market. You can make this India’s favorite sweet at the comfort of your home by following these simple steps.

Ingredients Required:

  • ½ cup Maida also called all-purpose Flour.
  • ½ cup grated Mawa or Khoya.
  • 1 table spoon baking soda.
  • Ghee or oil to deep fry.
  • Elaichi powder.
  • Saffron strands.
  • ½ cups of sugar.
  • 2 cups of water.

Steps to prepare Mawa/Khoya at home:

To prepare Khoya at home, you will need 1 liter of milk. Just follow the below steps carefully to make a perfect Khoya.

  • Boil the milk in a non sticky pan at a low flame.
  • Boil it till it turns thick. This process might take up to 1 hour.
  • 1 cup of Khoya can be prepared from one liter of milk. Choose your quantity accordingly.
  • Don’t forget to stir in between to prevent sticking.

You can skip this step to avoid a tedious process and purchase readymade Khoya instead from any dairy store.

Directions to prepare sugar syrup:

Sugar syrup is the main part of this yummy sweet. It is the main ingredient that adds taste to the whole dish. The best part is it is very easy to prepare. Just follow these steps.

  • Mix ½ cup of sugar with 3-4 cardamoms, Elaichi powder and 8-10 saffron strands in a pan.
  • Add 2-3 cups of water and boil with high flame.
  • Cook until the sugar syrup is little sticky. This process might take 8-10 minutes.
  • Stir the syrup in between and turn the flame off when the syrup is ready.

Steps involved in the preparation of Jamuns:

Now that the sugar syrup is ready, we are left with the preparation of Jamuns. This needs to be prepared meticulously without over or under frying. Follow the steps as it as to get soft fried Jamuns instantly.

  • Take the Khoya you have prepared or purchased and grate it using a grater.
  • Add baking soda and ½ cup of maida to it.
  • Mix them until the flour is etched with Khoya.
  • Continue the process until a smooth dough is formed. Add few spoons of milk or ghee j dif required.
  • Separate the dough into 15-20 round balls with the use of ghee.
  • Make small sized balls as the size of the ball would increase after soaking in the sugar syrup.
  • Now heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium flame.
  • When the ghee is medium hot add the freshly prepared dough balls and fry them till it turns light gold in color.
  • Deep fry them until they turn golden brown. It will take around 5-10 minutes.
  • Now transfer them into a bowl and let them cool down.
  • Now heat the sugar syrup till it’s warm. Add the fried dough balls into the syrup.
  • Soak them for 1-2 hours before serving.

And that’s it! Tasty, soft and plumpy gulab Jamun is ready to tickle your taste buds.
